ATLANTA, Oct. 17 -- For the first time, consumers will be able to stay within the city of Atlanta to take advantage of one-stop shopping convenience and every day low prices with the opening of the city's first Wal-Mart Supercenter on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the District at Howell Mill. In addition, customers in surrounding metro Atlanta counties can take advantage of two other Supercenters opening the same day in Buford and Stockbridge. Together, the three stores will have a powerful effect on the Atlanta area: bringing more than 1,200 jobs; supplying additional tax revenues; and supporting local organizations with more than $134,000 in grants in the first week alone.

Stores Feature New Designs and "Neighborhood" Merchandise Mix

The three new stores have the latest in-store designs and features currently being introduced by Wal-Mart this year, including wider aisles, new home trends displays, new in-store signage and concrete and hardwood laminate floors throughout. In addition, customers will find new merchandise in the expanded electronics department showcasing the latest in computers, iPods and hi-definition televisions, and new brands in apparel.

In anticipation of the upcoming holiday season, the new stores will also open with Wal-Mart's "Toyland," featuring the season's hottest toys at the coolest prices. Customers will be able to fill any child's wish list with everything from classic favorites such as Baby Alive, to digital and electronic toys, board games and plush characters that come to life. Each new store offers a full grocery department that includes an expanded selection of organic food items, bakery, delicatessen, frozen foods and meat, dairy and fresh produce. The added convenience of a Supercenter also allows customers to take advantage of other services while shopping, such as the one-hour photo lab, pharmacy, vision center, and Wal-Mart Connect Center for wireless phone sales.

Details for City of Atlanta Supercenter

Address: 1801 Howell Mill Road N.W., Atlanta - First in the City of Atlanta

As the first Wal-Mart in the city limits, the new 150,000-square-foot Supercenter is located in the lower level of the former Castlegate Hotel. The store represents another "urban design setting" for Wal-Mart as it continues to work with communities in different footprints to offer the Wal-Mart one-stop shopping experience. The store is off the street level, with the building housing a three-level parking deck nearby.

Wanting to make a positive impression with its first store in the city, Wal-Mart enlisted feedback and support from local community groups to ensure this store would meet the needs of the neighborhood. The results included recommendations for store design, layout and merchandise mix. For example, the color and design elements of the façade and exterior were created to blend in with local architecture. These earth tones and terra cotta were also incorporated in areas throughout the store's interior. The store features a one-of-a-kind bakery and deli with an island of prepared foods for easy "on the go" dinners. Wal-Mart also tailored the merchandise mix for the store toward its anticipated shoppers, incorporating apparel lines such as Metro 7 and Exsto, while featuring an expanded wine selection and a specialty cheese area. The store will be open from 6 a.m. until midnight daily. It will also house a Subway restaurant, and will have 26 full-service, eight express and four self check-out lanes.

Buford Supercenter Address: 3250 Sardis Church Road

The new store in Buford is a 202,000-square-foot Supercenter featuring 24 full-service and six express check-out lanes. It will be open 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The store's exterior was designed to accent the community in red brick, while the lawn and garden center is accented by brick columns. As with other new stores, it carries the new blue (merchandise) and green (grocery) signage throughout the interior to guide shoppers along the aisles. Other store features include a Tire & Lube Express, a Da-Vi nail salon, a SmartStyle hair salon, a Subway restaurant, a family fun center and a Murphy Oil gas station, which will open in the future. The store will also feature a Wal-Mart Money Center where customers can pay bills and purchase money orders and moneygrams.

Stockbridge Supercenter Address: 1400 Hudson Bridge Road, Stockbridge

The new 204,000-square-foot Supercenter in Stockbridge will have 23 full- service, four express and four self check-out lanes and will be open 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The store will feature a Tire & Lube Express, a Regal Nails salon, a SmartSyle hair salon, a Blimpie restaurant, a lawn and garden center and a family fun center. It will also have a branch of Best Bank and a Murphy Oil gas station.

Three New Store Brings 1,200 jobs and Career Opportunities Store Managers All Began as Hourly Associates

In total, the three Wal-Mart Supercenters will employ approximately 1,200 associates, and more than 8,200 applications have already been received for those jobs. The average wage at Wal-Mart for full-time hourly associates in the Atlanta area is approximately $10.33 per hour.*

Management for the Atlanta area stores was pleased but not surprised to have received so many applications. "People in the community know there are many great career opportunities and benefits that come with working for a store and company like Wal-Mart," said Atlanta Store Manager Chuck Rushing. He and the other two new store managers should know -- they began their Wal- Mart careers as hourly associates. Rushing started in 1983 at a store in Winfield, Ala.; Buford Store Manager Suzanne Prather began her career in 1992 in Winder; and Stockbridge Store Manager Greg Hogwood started as an hourly associate in Fayetteville.

Grand Opening Times and Events, Wednesday, Oct. 18

All three stores will open Wednesday, Oct 18, and customers at each will have the opportunity to meet Atlanta singer Diana DeGarmo, who will appear at each store. Additional grand opening activities include product samples, character appearances and other activities.

City of Atlanta: The grand opening celebration begins at 9 a.m., with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. Mayor Shirley Franklin has been invited to join the ceremonies and cut the ribbon with Wal-Mart home office dignitaries. Later in the day, American Idol finalist and Georgia native Diana DeGarmo will sing and sign autographs from 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. Ruben Studdard from American Idol will be at the store to sign autographs and meet customers the following day, Thursday, Oct. 19, at 4:30 p.m.

Buford: The grand opening ceremony begins at 7 a.m., with DeGarmo performing the national anthem. John Stewart, president of the Gwinnett County NAACP will lead the invocation, and members of the Gwinnett County Fire Department will present the colors. Other entertainment at the ceremony includes the Buford City Community Chorus and the Mill Creek High School Band. Store associates will sell hot dogs and Coca-Cola products to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network, which has received more than $300 million dollars from similar store activities over the last two decades.

Stockbridge: Grand opening ceremony begins at 7:30 a.m. Store associate Samantha Long will perform the national anthem, and the Rev. Ralph Wade of Jodeco Baptist Church will lead the invocation. The Dutchtown Junior Air Force ROTC unit will present the colors, and Stockbridge Mayor R.G. Kelley will cut the ribbon to the new store. DeGarmo will sing and sign autographs from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The Dutchtown High School Symphonic Band will perform at 1:30 p.m.

Seriously, Target eats up, spits out, and steps all over Walmart.

A Wal Mart in urban Atlanta?

Say it aint so....... so at least tell me how awful the facade is.

Trae- 10-18-2006
You know the facade. Plain blue and white:

Not actual Walmart.

MattSal- 10-18-2006
They need to build three-story Wal-Mart's instead. At least don't contribute to the horrid density Atlanta already experiences.

Trae- 10-18-2006
Yeah, there is a three story Home Depot (or Target, can't remember), in Downtown Minneapolis.

Please don't get me wrong: I am NOT a fan or customer of Wal-Mart. But...what they built at Howell Mill Road is NOT the big blue box. Here's a picture of it, designed to fit into the neighborhood and the new shopping development:

Walmart gets an A for that design. Not bad for a Walmart. I expected less from them. Was there an organizaation that enforced this decision?

Thanks, Trae. I've been lurking for a while. I live in Midtown Atlanta and am a strong supporter of urbanizism.

As for this Wal-Mart, they finally learned their lesson and worked with the neighborhood. In fact, they presented every stage of the design to the neighborhood groups for approval before moving on. That was very smart. They have now earned respect from the area.

Yeah, they had to do this in the neighborhood I live in. Target bought a large piece of land (that was set aside for commercial development). The association for my neighborhood pressured Target enough to make them change their design. We also had a Walmart a few miles north from where I live and they did the same thing. They actually look real nice and are forested in trees:

That's some Walmart, huh?

Well apparently the Wal Mart is not that hideous. They are still building awful buildings, but the more desirable communities (that have a little pull over Wal Mart) like say Katy, TX, or Edmond, OK, exercise their say. The one in Katy actually looks pretty bad from the photos Trae posted. The one in Edmond doesn't look bad but it does look sorta silly. It was designed to emulate small town shops.

The one at Howell Mill does not look bad...

Trae- 10-19-2006
The one I posted looks nice. Better than those blue boxes that are king around the U.S.

Mabye it'll be a WalMart skyscraper...

I actually went to the howell mill walmart when it opened wednesday. Here are my observations:

The inside is very very nice. Obviously since its brand new this goes without saying, but everything was very clean. The aisles are nice and wide, the floors of the different deparments are shiny hardwood, and their grocery/bakery area is certainly full featured. The employees were well dressed, etc. Again it was opening day so I'm sure everything and everyone was on its best behavior. I have no qualms about saying that the inside was certainly the nicest walmart i've ever been in, but thats not saying too much. Instead of a McDonalds in it, they have a Subway. They had fresh sushi at the entrance. Things like that, they are clearly trying to market towards the urban, more upscale shopper that lives in midtown.

Now, the negatives... mainly the parking. The walmart is in the bottom portion of the huge deck structure they built, so it just kind of has a dark and dingy feel to it. I went at night, and it was raining / foggy so that probably had something to do with it. During the day i'm sure its fine. But it all just felt like it was kind of down in a cave, and cramped in, when usually you imagine walmarts as these huge, open, sprawling monstrosities.

Bottom line... i wasn't impressed. we walked out saying, yep, its still a walmart. How can you be impressed by walmart exactly?

But otoh I wasn't dissapointed either. Its exactly what it is, and nothing more, nothing else. If anything its gonna be nice to have one so close, but its not like we're gonna go hang out at the walmart on friday nights cause its just so cool.

I'm sure we will end up hitting it up though, cause the next closest place is target in buckhead.

If you need any pointers, I've mastered the art of boycotting Wal Mart...
